Canoe Options Features Details

All DAMX 3000 Series Canoe dry suits are made to measure – our C-cut fit formula has evolved over many years to produce suits that fit accurately and comfortably with a freedom of movement specifically tailored to the range of open canoe postures.    Maximum comfort, unbeatable robust durability with excellent freedom of movement encouraging you to extend your performance limits.

Available with either BREATHABLE or NON-BREATHABLE upper section.  ( for breathable upper sections we offer a very cost effective replacement service – the non-breathable trouser section will typically last four or five times as long as the breathable upper section )

100% waterproof year after year after year…..

All DAMX dry suits come with a tough, long lasting non-breathable tri-laminate trouser section with a track record for frequently lasting into the teens of years.  We do not EVER produce breathable trouser sections – breathable fabric is simply not robust enough to last a decent length of time in the highly stressed shin, knee, inside leg and crotch areas.  Fully breathable off-the-peg dry  suits typically begin leaking in the second year and are in the bin by the fourth year of average leisure use.  DAMX 3000 Series non-breathable dry suit fabric will not leak until you eventually wear holes through it. Holes are ALWAYS repairable at any age.

There are examples of the DAMX 3000 Series dry suit still in use at twenty years old.

Features included in base price:

  • Latex neck, wrists and socks.  –
  • Fabric ankle cuff latex sock protection
  • Adjustable belt

An extensive options list is available.

We offer either a breathable or a non-breathable upper section.  We use world class, well tried and tested examples of both types of fabric.  There are pros and cons to each.

Why choose breathable?    The advantages offered by breathable fabrics can be useful in terms of increased warmth, comfort and hence performance. These benefits are a result of your sweat being exhausted through the waterproof membrane of the suit and escaping in the form of water vapour. Yes the suit is 100% waterproof. And yes, breathable fabrics do work.  BUT these advantages do not come without a down side: VERY much shorter life expectancy and greater care requirements.  Think 3-5 years compared with 12-20 years life expectancy.

The benefits of breathable fabrics are often exaggerated. The scientific fact is that breathable fabrics function VERY poorly when they are cold and/or wet or covered by a buoyancy aid.  If you only wear a dry suit when it’s cold and/or wet, you should seriously consider choosing a fully non-breathable dry suit it will last you a very impressive number of years.

Which type of paddler would benefit most from a breathable upper section?     Flat water paddlers are the most likely to get a worthwhile benefit from a breathable upper section.  Even when the fabric does begin to go porous, it won’t be a disaster as the upper part of the suit will rarely be submerged or even fully wet ( unlike a whitewater paddler for instance )

Who should choose a non-breathable 3000 Series dry suit?
If absolute cost-effective 100% leak free longevity is your priority then choose non-breathable. If you only wear a dry suit when it’s cold and/or wet, choose non-breathable.  If you frequently have to store your kit wet, choose non-breathable. If you are a white water paddler and your kit is mainly wet – choose non-breathable.

For some canoe paddlers, particularly those who use their dry suit for a wide variety of activities, there is no clear cut right or wrong decision.  We can always fit  a replacement non-breathable upper to a breathable suit and vice-versa if your usage pattern changes.

Total protection for the latex wrist seals – prevents accidental damage, approximately doubles the life of the latex wrist seals and gives a much improved watertight seal.  Neoprene and velcro adjustable design.  ( We do offer a cone type, non-adjustable design by special request, but this is not our preferred version )

A protective neoprene cone which protects the latex neck seal and makes the suit warmer by reducing wind chill.  Designed to avoid the abrasion and discomfort that can be experienced with some of the velcro adjustable designs.

Please note that this feature is not designed to be a tight fit – it will not provide any additional level of watertight seal beyond acting as a deflector.

A short dry suit zip allowing you to have a pee without the hassle of getting out of your dry suit. Fitted horizontally across the crotch area to minimise the flexing of the zip and fabric by aligning it with the natural folds of the suit when you are seated.  The zip is in a minimally stressed location and the failure rate is almost zero even in suits over ten years old.  The zip is concealed beneath a protective fabric cover.

It is possible for women to use a comfort zip in conjunction with a “Shewee” ( funnel type thing! )  The zip is sited as low as possible in the dry suit for women.  It must be said that some women do not get along at all well with the comfort zip!!!  The Drop Seat design is the other option for women.

High contrast, high impact asymmetric two colour design.  Multi-coloured suits usually mean extra seams and early failure points. We have designed these suits to have only one additional waterproof seam in a totally unstressed part of the suit. Amazing colour contrast with no negative impact on the durability or flexibility of the suit.

Please note:  this option is only available in non-breathable back zip dry suits.

For the ladies – an alternative to the comfort zip + shewee and MUCH easier to use. This is an excellent option for open canoe users with the zip located around the torso of the suit at upper buttock level – you can’t damage the zip by sitting on it.  The drop seat design does however have the potential to be a weak spot in the otherwise very robust trouser section of the suit especially if the suit is used for any other purpose such as dinghy sailing or kayaking.  Please DO NOT use the suit for dinghy sailing if a drop seat zip is fitted.  For kayaking please be aware that the zip will be inside the cockpit area and subject to many compressive and bending forces.

The suit will be fitted with internal braces instead of a belt because the drop seat zip overlaps the normal belt location – the braces are included in the price.

Please note that our otherwise VERY supportive warranty will not cover most forms of drop seat zip failure. It should be noted that the replacement cost is a significant £75. Despite all of this; if you need one, you need one and they are VERY much more convenient than the comfort zip

Adjustable braces with quick release buckles and a short elasticated section for strain relief.  Braces are unnecessary for the majority of body shapes – the belt will do the same job as braces but without the hassle of getting them crossed over, twisted or wrapped around your leg etc.  Braces can be fitted at a later date if you change your mind.

If any of your body measurements fall within the “extra large” definition, a 10% surcharge is applied to the base price of the suit. ( the +10% does not apply to the cost of any optional extras – over-cuffs, over-necks, comfort zips etc )

Extra Large is defined as being in excess of any of the following:  6’4″   18 Stone    49″ chest, stomach or hips/bottom.
